Modern tourists use the Internet to acquire information and make decisions, including setting destinations and accommodations through tourist information sites such as TripAdvisor, as well as deciding destinations by referring to user reviews of restaurant evaluation sites. Customers first access the site to obtain information for hotel reservations or visits, and in particular, they use reviews from customers written on websites and SNS operated by online travel agencies (OTAs) at home and abroad. In particular, the younger generation, who are good at utilizing travel information and various data, is familiar with the Internet and smartphones when traveling, and is actively utilizing online reviews to select accommodations. As the Internet environment develops rapidly, netizens are frequently posting articles and photos directly beyond time and space, and users directly post reviews of the products and services in specific apps that can write reviews. Although some of the negative or entirely unreliable contents of these articles and photographs are also found, companies are actively responding to these articles with great interest because positive and negative reviews of the companies continue to occur in real time.

 

Recently, the concept of smart tourism has emerged as information acquisition and sharing using IT devices such as smartphones and smart cars has become more active. This change has led to greater opportunities for consumers to directly contact service providers, resulting in the spread of existing business-to-business distribution channels to business-to-customer channels. At the same time, more information and a variety of options have been given to tourists, with the industry's initiative shifting from the producer to the consumer. Smart tourism allows tourists to acquire what they want, such as information acquisition, decision-making, various services, and security status, at any place, every place, and real-time. In other words, the core of smart tourism is a system that enables users to obtain real-time information on search topics such as nearby destinations, accommodations, or restaurants through social network services (SNS) and make decisions in the direction they want. If early-stage smart tourism is based on ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) technologies such as the Internet and smartphones to enhance tourists' access to information, several applications recently provide customized information using consumers' location information and further support reservations and payments. Shared economy-based services are growing their competitiveness through search, price comparison, and mutual review by service providers. In addition to the arrival of a shared economic tourism ecosystem where tourists can obtain necessary information anytime and anywhere through communication with other tourists, smart tourism is developing to the stage where big data analysis can better identify the characteristics of tourists and provide customized information.

 

Corporate use of big data enhances corporate competitiveness and improves productivity by predicting customers' behavior in advance and preparing countermeasures. By deeply understanding the customer's inner and market with vast accumulated data, it can be reflected in management to increase efficiency. Big data analysis can be a great help in establishing tourism policies and marketing businesses in that it can be used to formulate strategies through predictions of consumers' behavior and psychological status. It is used to collect and analyze the results of qualitative data on recognition, emotion, and experience expressed in quantitative data such as tourist location, consumption, etc. and to provide customized services considering the characteristics and preferences of the tourist site's demand forecasts, recognition surveys, and types of travelers.
